MEET NAN

Nan Carlton is a writer and illustrator of children’s books. She was born and raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina. Today, she and her husband divide their time between Richmond, Virginia and Cape Charles, Virginia.

Nan studied music education at Lenoir-Rhyne University (BME) and Appalachian State University (MA). Her work experiences include public school music teacher, church choir director, and private piano and flute instructor.

As a youngster Nan’s favorite books were Fuss Bunny, Noisy Nancy Norris, and The Boxcar Children. Her childhood home—teeming with books, vinyl records, and art supplies—provided all the necessary ingredients to inspire her love of reading and music and to encourage creativity in this budding crafter.

When she’s not writing or illustrating a book, Nan enjoys playing hymns on her mountain dulcimer, reading, lollygagging in a porch swing on rainy days, reading, collecting sea glass on beach strolls, reading, and exploring new places with her husband.

Every day, my work allows me to imagine and dream, to paint and color,
to use scissors, glue sticks, and paper scraps, to combine words and
pictures, to create a children’s book. What a life!
